Precise gas billing procedure at Chinese energy group

Chinese state-owned enterprises now want to align with European standards and thus EP Engineering, represented with its own office in Beijing since 2011, was charged with the creation of an exact reproduction of such a system.

Whoever has a gas connection also has a gas meter. But how much is a cubic meter of gas actually? And who guarantees to the customer that the meter is calculating the exact amount? In Europe, virtually the entire natural gas billing procedure is based on the German-European natural gas calibration system that is used to determine this information accurately. Chinese state-owned enterprises now want to align with European standards and thus EP Engineering, represented with its own office in Beijing since 2011, was charged with the creation of an exact reproduction of such a system. "We are helping the Chinese to bill their gas," says company director Alois Ehrler as he summarizes the current project in China.

The core of the high-precision system will be built in Niederstetten, which will then be installed on a several thousand-kilometer long gas pipeline that runs from western China to Shanghai. Alois Ehrler describes the negotiations in the People's Republic As "friendly, but tough regarding the matter." A Chinese employee of Ehrler is always there. If you want to do business with Chinese, you have to ensure the right atmosphere for discussion and that only works if you have accurate knowledge of East Asian culture.

Alois Ehrler is hardly worried about industrial pirated imitations. "Copies are mass products, especially in China. We manufacture high-precision individual pieces with an extremely high standard of quality that you cannot easily copy," says Alois Ehrler.

However, China is just one market where our test engineering can be found. The "EP standards" are also used in Brazil, Japan, Moldova and in the Czech Republic. Made in Niederstetten: German technology and German approaches to measuring are exported worldwide.
